24 October 2011 South African President Jacob Zuma has expressed his “deepest sympathy and condolences” to the people and government of Turkey after a devastating earthquake struck the eastern part of the country on Sunday. The 7.2 magnitude quake is reported to have claimed many lives, leaving many more injured and property damaged. In sending his heartfelt condolences to Turkey, particularly to the families that had lost loved ones, Zuma said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Turkish people during this difficult time of mourning.” A total of 275 rescue teams from 38 Turkish provinces had reached the quake-hit Van province in southeast Turkey, Turkey’s TRT television reported on Sunday, quoting the country’s prime minister’s office. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was visiting the quake-stricken area to assess the situation. Turkey’s Dogan news agency reported that 85 Turks were killed in the strong earthquake; 25 bodies were found in Van city of Van province, 59 bodies in Ercis town – the worst hit in the quake – and another in Adlicevaz, a town of Bitlis province nearby. The report said that more than 500 people were injured in the quake and that the death toll might increase. More than 17 aftershocks, including a 5.1-magnitude tremor, had taken place. Earlier this month, Erdogan made an official visit to South Africa, where he held talks with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. The two countries agreed to further develop relations, which in time might turn into high-level council meetings and fuel momentum between the regional powers. Source: BuaNews-Xinhua

One thing that’s often lost amid the spectacle of the Golden State Warriors’ record-setting regular season is that this squad’s style is quite different from the one that went on a dominant championship run a year ago. The 2014-15 Warriors were astonishingly balanced; they had the NBA’s second-best offense and led the league in defensive efficiency. This season’s version, however, was first in offensive rating by a healthy margin but sixth-best on defense — good, but not great. The resulting team was ever-so-slightly better, but less symmetrical. In the playoffs, though, the Warriors’ defense has helped the team battle through Stephen Curry’s absence and reclaim the mantle of NBA title favorite. Here’s the offensive and defensive efficiency of this season’s playoff teams relative to average, accounting for the regular-season performance of a team’s opponents:1These numbers also factor in home-court advantage (roughly 2.8 points per 100 possessions) and the championship leverage of every game. 1Cleveland Cavaliers9-0+18.4+2.7+21.1 9Atlanta Hawks4-6-1.3-0.0-1.3 10Los Angeles Clippers2-4-3.2+1.2-2.1 6Indiana Pacers3-4-2.3+4.1+1.8 16Memphis Grizzlies0-4-12.9-5.2-18.1 Best team performances of the 2016 NBA playoffs 13Houston Rockets1-4-12.5+0.7-11.8 12Detroit Pistons0-4+2.3-10.8-8.4 The Cavs have blown away their playoff peers so far, but Golden State deserves credit as well for posting the best defensive performance of any remaining team. Indeed, the Warriors’ ratings look a lot like the balanced attack that drove their championship last season — even though Curry has suited up for just six of the team’s 12 games. When the Warriors require outbursts of unadulterated offensive brilliance — like, say, 12 points in 82 seconds or 17 points in an overtime period — Curry has been happy to oblige. But Golden State has also held the mighty Oklahoma City Thunder offense to an efficiency rate 10 points per 100 possessions below their regular-season standard through two games of the Western Conference finals. Even on nights when the Warrior offense isn’t operating at peak productivity, such as Game 1 against OKC, the defense can keep the game competitive into its final minutes. With Draymond Green leading the way, Golden State’s D in this series has already forced the Thunder into two of their 19 worst games of the season according to quantified shot quality, a player tracking-based measure that accounts for the location and conditions under which every shot is taken. In games 1 and 2, Kevin Durant’s shot quality has been his sixth- and 21st-worst of the year, and Russell Westbrook has been limited to his 31st and 24th-worst games. If it’s seemed like Russ and KD have been swimming upstream for long stretches in the series so far, this is why. The duo’s effective field goal percentage in the series is just 43 percent, far below their combined regular-season mark of 53 percent. There’s still plenty of time for the Thunder to wrest control of the series back from Golden State. But to do it, Oklahoma City will have to go through the Warrior defense, a unit that’s back to being as sturdy as it was during the team’s title run last season.Check out our latest NBA predictions. 15Charlotte Hornets3-4-11.5-4.5-16.0 2Golden State Warriors9-3+5.5+4.8+10.3 14Dallas Mavericks1-4-5.6-10.0-15.7 5Portland Trail Blazers5-6+3.9-1.7+2.2 7Miami Heat7-7-2.2+2.7+0.5 11Boston Celtics2-4-10.4+2.1-8.3 3Oklahoma City Thunder9-4+6.1+1.6+7.7 4San Antonio Spurs6-4+0.9+4.9+5.8 Team efficiencies adjusted for strength of schedule using opponents‘ regular-season stats.Source: Basketball-Reference.com 8Toronto Raptors8-7+0.9-0.7+0.2 TEAMRECORDOFFENSEDEFENSETOTAL

And after finishing as NCAA runner-ups last year, Ohio State is trying to capture its first NCAA championship since 2001.“My sophomore year, we got third [in the NCAA Conference], last year, we got second and this year, our team is in pretty good shape,” senior Seth Delbridge said. “Everyone is doing pretty well, so I think we all have it in our heads that we could contend for a national title.” With five new freshman on their 24-person active roster, the Buckeyes are focusing on being team oriented to reach their goals.“The preseason really is kind of a time for us, as a team, to grow,” said Drew Moling, the team’s director of operations. “We’re really trying to help our student athletes and this team to create that bond, for this year.”Ohio State will have two new talented freshman join its roster. Sean Neighbarger and Max Andryushchenko are newcomers to look out for. Both competed at the P&G U.S.A. National Championships over the summer. Some returning key players, and this year’s team captains, competing as all-around athletes, are Delbridge, senior Sean Melton and junior Alec Yoder. In addition to competing for the Buckeyes, Melton and Yoder are also currently on the USA Men’s Senior National Team, and both competed alongside Neighbarger and Andryushchenko at the P&G National Championships.“Those four, who were training together this summer, were competing together, so I think those guys are really going to kind of bring some leadership, from competing at the U.S.A. level, to this team and beyond,” Moling said.Moleing said some major competitors in the Big Ten are Illinois and Minnesota, the second- and third-place finishers in the conference, respectively. In the NCAA, OSU’s biggest competition is Oklahoma. The Sooners are three-time defending NCAA champions and remain the team to beat this season.“They want to win,” Moling said. “Like I said, it’s been 2001 since we’ve brought home an NCAA championship, and this team is super hungry for that this year.” To up their game and prepare for the challenge of the season to come, the Buckeyes are looking to increase strength and endurance by incorporating more conditioning workouts, both before and after their event practices.“At the end of the day, if we hit our routines and we do our job, I think we’re going to, hopefully come out on top.” After an intrasquad scrimmage Nov. 18, the Buckeyes will be back in action with another exhibition Jan. 6. The Alumni Exhibition starts at 2 p.m. at St. John Arena.
Ilkay Gündogan doesn’t think that the 7-1 win from the World Cup 2014 will affect Germany’s approach to the upcoming friendly match against Brazil and he is certain that this will be a completely different game. The Manchester City midfielder knows that the things have changed a lot since then and the most of the Brazil squad are completely different players – and it will be a tough game for Joachim Low’s side. The former BVB player spoke about the upcoming game as he said, according to Sports Keeda:Neymar can win the Ballon d’Or, says Ander Herrera Andrew Smyth – September 13, 2019 An “excited” Ander Herrera believes new Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Neymar is a contender for the Ballon d’Or alongside Kylian Mbappe.“We were all sitting in disbelief in front of the TV. Such a result is not commonplace for a World Cup semi-final.”“The current Brazilian team is not comparable to that of 2014. The 7-1 is no longer an issue for us – just having the two sides play against each other is special.”“Brazil are definitely one of the favourites for the World Cup. The Brazilians are very emotional, and they hold football in such a high regard, it gives them such a zest for life and has an almost spiritual meaning for them.”
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is braced for a season-long battle in the bottom half of the Premier LeagueThe Magpies settled for a disappointing 0-0 draw against bottom-placed side Fulham on Saturday at home to leave them down in 15th-place and five points above the drop zone.Following a summer of little investment in the club, Benitez has all but ruled out a repeat of last term’s 10th-place finish.“I’m not happy with a point,” said Benitez, according to Football365.“But I’m happy because we didn’t lose and we have four points from the last two games. I want to win and I want to win every game.“The problem is that you have to be realistic and if you cannot win, be sure you don’t lose these kinds of games.Pochettino admits Wanyama remains in his Spurs plans Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Kenyan international, Victor Wanyama, was the protagonist of a summer transfer saga, but in the end, he is set to stay at Tottenham Hotspur.“It’s not easy for anyone here. I was talking last week with people at Huddersfield and we talked about the pressure, a big city, a big club, what it means for us, what it means for them and how you manage this situation.“I think our fans know. Obviously during the game, they want the best for the team and they are expecting something more, but I am sure after a couple of days, they will say, ‘Okay, we have to keep supporting the team because it’s what we have and these players are giving everything’.“Sometimes we make the wrong decisions, but it does not mean that we are not trying to do our best every single game.“I said after Huddersfield that we have to give credit to this group of players because with all the circumstances here, they are doing well.“But still, we have to realise that we will be in the bottom half of the table during the whole season because it’s like that, and if we do well and we can higher, it will be another miracle.”
During a press conference this Tuesday, Pep Guardiola revealed that he doesn’t expect a more mature version of left-back Benjamin Mendy. In football there are players like Benjamin Mendy, who are different from the rest, they have a more jovial demeanor as they can’t seem to have an off switch and manager Pep Guardiola knew this when he first signed the Frenchman from AS Monaco.Ever since he got to Manchester City, this player has always shown a predilection for the more active way of life, the one that isn’t necessarily as private as perhaps the manager would like.Pep Guardiola has learned to separate the player from the public persona with Mandy and other players, but the Frenchman is the one who has given him a more challenging relationship. From the very start at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola repeatedly stated that he never really appreciated the social media life that his defender led, Mendy vowed to slow it down a bit but he never really did it.Now after a couple of years have passed, it appears that the Catalan manager has finally given up on his pursue to stop Mendy from being so public with his life and he has finally accepted the Frenchman for who he is.🗣 | Pep Guardiola: “Benjamin Mendy is in the squad tomorrow (against Burton). Maybe on the bench.”#FPL #FantasyPL #FFScout #GW24 #mcfc pic.twitter.com/6y3xXxq5NU— Fantasy Football Scout (@FFScout) January 22, 2019On Tuesday, when asked about this public persona that Benjamin Mendy has on all his social media accounts, Guardiola explained why he doesn’t have a problem with it anymore. The Catalan manager will be happy as long as the payer responds on training and on the pitch, he doesn’t care about the stuff outside work anymore.“I am delighted with Benjamin,” Guardiola told a news conference via Four Four Two.“I am sad because we were not able to play him because of injuries but that sometimes happens.”“The way he is training, the way he is in the locker room… you cannot imagine how much the people love him. I am delighted – I just want to use him more! That’s all.”“I am not unhappy with Mendy [using social media heavily]. I am not here to change his mentality. His way, the way he lives… is what it is. When we bought him, we knew it.”Liverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“So, when we are talking about training sessions, always it’s perfect but he is active on social media. He likes to be. It is what it is.”“We try to convince him, but I’m not his father! [I tell him]: ‘Be focused on your job and what we have to do. You are young, and you can be one of the best left-backs, but it’s up to you,’” he added.Pep Guardiola: Benjamin Mendy ‘needs to be focused’ to achieve potential https://t.co/OYoao9X0Z6 pic.twitter.com/SsCpZHlnCg— Prem Brew (@prembrew) January 23, 2019After hearing Pep Guardiola speak frankly about Benjamin Mendy’s lifestyle, thinking about the poor way in which Jose Mourinho managed this with Paul Pogba at Manchester United is inevitable. The Portuguese manager truly hated this side of the French midfielder, they were always at odds for several reasons but one of the biggest disagreements they had was due to an Instagram story that Pogba posted after Manchester United was eliminated from the FC Cup by Derby County. We could see Paul laughing on a short video right after the Red Devils were eliminated in penalties, this was the origin of the already famous argument between the two of them on next morning’s training session after the infamous defeat.Pep Guardiola takes a very different approach to this with Benjamin Mendy, he prefers to understand his players instead of trying to limit him and this has brought a very peaceful relationship between the two.Even if Pep Guardiola doesn’ like the whole circus that is the social media lifestyle, he understands that times have changed and everybody has to adapt to the new era.‘I’m not his dad’ – Guardiola won’t change much-loved Mendy https://t.co/3P2ThhhBvl pic.twitter.com/KZXk9nDGia— Cleansheet (@Cleansheet) January 22, 2019What’s your take on players who love using social media for everything? Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud revealed that Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival certainly darkens his future and opened the door towards a potential return to France. The French World Cup winner left his homeland in 2012 for Arsenal after helping Montpellier beat Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title.Last year then saw Giroud make a controversial switch to Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea after a lack of game time at the Emirates Stadium. However, under coach Maurizio Sarri, Giroud has fared little better with just six starts in the Premier League this season. This has led to reports linking Giroud with a return to France with both Marseille and Lyon.Speaking to CANAL Foot Club, prior to Higuain’s arrival last week, Giroud indicated a return to Ligue 1 could happen even if his priority is to remain in England.“I will never make people unanimously satisfied with me,” admitted Giroud.Solskjaer praises Harry Maguire after Man United’s 1-0 win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Harry Maguire for praise after helping Manchester United keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Leicester City.“There is a little part of regret and frustration. The public expects a goalscorer to score goals. I’m the fourth best goalscorer of French football and nobody can take that away from me.“The coach makes [Eden] Hazard play nine which is detrimental to strikers. But he is the best player I’ve ever played with.“If the club decides to get another striker, like Higuain, it will certainly darken my future at Chelsea.“I’ve never said no to a return to France. Lyon and Marseille are two great clubs. My priority is to stay in the Premier League though.”Higuain made his Chelsea debut on Sunday in their 3-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday at Stamford Bridge and was replaced by Giroud in the 82nd-minute of the fourth-round clash. The Blues will next take a trip to the Vitality Stadium where they will face Bournemouth in a Premier League match on Wednesday with kick-off set for 20:45 (CET).
